Campaign BlogOct. 13th - Another great forum at the NW Business Club today. Tough questions from a truly engaged audience. Ballots get mailed out today, and we go live on television. Check out our ads here, or look for them coming to a tv near you!Oct. 7th - The day of three forums! I had a great time at the Chamber of Commerce forum today, you can read a write up about that here. From there, I went to the Whatcom Council on Aging forum and had a great but brief talk with some of our seniors here in the community. Tonight, I top it all off with a forum for the Silver Beach Neighborhood Association at 7pm at Blodel-Donovan Park. Looking for more forums? There will be two next Weds, Oct 13th. One will be hosted by the Northwest Business Club at Noon at the Elks Lodge on Samish Way. The other one will be at 7pm in the County Council chambers, hosted by NWCitizen.com. I look forward to seeing you there! Sept 28th- I had a great time at the Rome Grange Meet and Greet last night. Its clear that there are lots of people who are very concerned about what the County Council has been up to. As we roll right into ballot season, I wanted to give you guys an idea of where I'll be in the next week so you can see me in action: Saturday Oct 2nd- Come join me as we doorbell Fairhaven. Meet at 10am on the Village Green and we will disperse from there. This is a joint event with candidate for the 40th LD, Kris Lytton. Tuesday, Oct 5th- Sudden Valley Meet and Greet. If you live in Sudden Valley, come on down to the Adult Center at 6:30pm for Hot Cider and me, Jean Melious. Wednesday, Oct 6th- BP Cherry Point Candidate Forum, 11am Candidate forum Thursday, Oct 7th- Whatcom Chamber of Commerce forum Noon at the Bellweather, then Whatcom Council on Aging Forum at the Senior Center at 1:30pm, then Silver Beach Neighborhood Association forum at Bloedel-Donovan park at 7pm. And that's just this next week. I'll update with more opportunities soon! Sept 19th- The tempo has really picked up, here in Whatcom County, and you can feel the excitement as November comes barrelling towards us. I've been quite busy knocking on doors, and really talking to people about what they are concerned about in our county. I had a great time on THE JOE SHOW on KBAI 930. You can listen to it by clicking here. I also had the great honor of carrying on the political tradition of Kitty Stimpson by holding a great political event at the old Stimpson house, hosted by Bob Hall and Seth Fleetwood. You can see a few of the pictures below. It is almost time for WWU campus to fill up with students again, and I look forward to meeting many of them face to face at Info Fair this week where "Students for Jean" will be hosting a booth for me. Come on by! Sept 8th- Please, everybody, read "The Gristle" in today's Cascadia Weekly, and pass it on to your friends and acquaintances. The link is the Cascadia Weekly icon below. The article talks about the tactic of my opponent, Tony Larson, to avoid engaging in open public debates on the issues critical to Whatcom County. I've committed to every forum that has sent out an invitation, and Larson has agreed to none. Voters can't know how Larson will interact with the public, what kind of public servant he will be, with no more information than his name on signs and his face on flyers. If Larson doesn't care enough to talk to citizens before the election, why would anybody think that he would care after the election? August 28th- Great day doorbelling out in the shadow of Mt. Baker. Lots of people interested in the race, wanting more information about how Whatcom County can move forward as a great place to live and work. August 17th- Thank you Whatcom County! I am honored by your support. It is clear that there is a real desire for responsible leadership on our County Council, and I look forward to serving you as your next councilwoman. I would especially like to thank Theresa Sygitowicz for running. It is never easy to seek public office and while we don't always agree, I admire your passion for public service. In the coming months, I look forward to engaging my opponent on the substantive issues that matter for our county and hope that we can move past the meaningless slogans and really discuss our plans for improving Whatcom County. July 28th - "Jean Melious is the best choice for Whatcom County Council . . . We believe she is the best candidate for voters to choose in the August primary and again in November." July 25th - Its that time again. The Bellingham Herald posted a great question and answer session, you can find that in its entirety here:
Also, I will be participating in the Bile Mize forum this Weds, July
28th at the Rome Grange out on Mt. Baker Highway at 7pm. I look forward
to seeing you there!July 14th - Hello everyone! I hope the summer is treating you well. Team Jean has been hitting the streets, and knocking on doors all across the county. Just last Saturday, a dedicated team of volunteers tackled the Alabama Hill neighborhood. We also had a great time at Bellingham's 10th annual pride festival. Here is Team Jean walking in the parade ![]() July 3rd- Happy 4th of July Weekend! Its cloudy right now but here's hoping it clears off for all the fun. These last couple weeks I've been meeting with people in beautiful Lynden. Just like you and me, they are concerned about jobs, our threatened farmland and how we can grow as a community. I am planning some good volunteer events soon, so stay tuned! June 24th- I'm happy to announce that I have been endorsed by the Northwest Washington Central Labor Council and the Bellingham-Whatcom County Professional Fire Fighters IAFF LOCAL 106. They both recognize the need for strong leadership and balance on our County Council. Thank you both!
![]() June 8th- Hello! As some of you have noticed, our yard signs are going up all around the county. If you would like one, email Riley at riley.sweeney@gmail.com and you will see one in your front yard shortly! Just so you know, they look like this: ![]() |
